The handle of the katana is called the tsuka. The handle is made up of two halves, usually of magnolia wood, which are held together by rice glue. The kashira or tsuka gashira is a small pommel at the end of the handle. It reinforces the tsuka. The pommel is either round or oval and secured with a metal cap called the kashira gane. The skin is then covered with a silk or cotton braiding, called the tsuka ito (Bing Mi), and the braiding is known as tsuka maki (Bing Juan). Tsuka maki can be different for swords. There are combat wraps such as hineri-maki or katate-maki. Or, there are more artistic styles, like jabara. The maki-dome is a decorative and practical knot that finishes the wrapping. It is located on the side of the handle. You can find menuki (Mu Guan), which are small decorative pieces arranged asymmetrically along each side of the handle. They not only hide fastenings but also improve grip.
The middle finger will grip the choil right where the tip bends upwards. This can create a very uncomfortable grip when used tightly or over a long period of time. What a shame.
